Hutch 1980's vintage-style Hubs

Hutch Hubs are a faithful recreation of the original mag/ti hubs released in 1983 with minimal changes. Although it was not possible to use magnesium for the hub shells due to its dangerous properties when machining and plating, more titanium was used on these than the originals to make up for it. These modern hubs have aluminum hub shells and 4 titanium axle nuts (originals had steel axle nuts) in addition to the titanium axles.

In the 1980's Hutch wasn't perfect and made some manufacturing errors. One of them was that they made the front hub spacing incorrect (93mm instead of 100mm). These modern front hub shells are stretched slightly and include the correct 100mm hub spacing. Front and rear hub shells are also machined from a single piece of billet aluminum while retaining the original 3-piece shape, rather than actually being 3 separate pieces pressed together. The Axle Locks work with the internal bearing spacer to eliminate bearing drag, just like the originals.

Hutch Hubs packaging is reversed-engineered from the original "display box" design, yet updated with 2-color printing.

NOTE: Sapim spokes are recommended for use with Hutch hubs. DT spokes have a slightly larger head and do not easily make the bend on the hub shell when installed. This could cause the hub shell to be damaged beyond repair when tightening the spokes or when riding. Keep in mind that modern Hutch hubs are a recreation of 40 year-old technology, and in today's world hubs would have a larger diameter flange that provides more material around the spoke holes for added strength. Asahi spokes were the most-common spokes that riders used back in the 1980's, but those vintage spokes may be difficult to find today. Use good judgment and care with whatever brand of spoke you use. If it feels like too much pressure is required to get the spoke to lay into the hole correctly, use a different brand. Spoke size and shape vary slightly from brand to brand, and it is impossible to create a 40 year old hub design that perfectly mates with all modern spoke products on the market today. Overtightening spokes could also damage hubs beyond repair, so be sure to request assistance from a qualified and experienced wheel-builder for lacing, tightening, and truing your wheels.
